Support scheme for small-scale renewables set to close, while EIIs gain exemption

A consultation was opened by the government on 19 July on the closure of its Feed-in Tariffs (FiT) scheme. Opened in 2010 the FiT supports small-scale low- carbon technology developments such as sub-5MW solar installations.

Government could increase energy bills by exempting industry from cost of renewables

The government has proposed to widen a scheme that exempts some energy-intensive industries (EIIs) from paying the indirect costs related to renewable subsidy schemes. Through a consultation launched 22 June, the changes would allow a greater number of EIIs to avoid fees for Contracts for Difference (CfD) renewables auctions, the Renewables Obligation (RO) for large-scale renewable electricity projects and, if introduced, Feed-in Tariff (FiT), costs which support small-scale renewables.

Calls grow for UK to adopt net zero emissions target

On 1 June a cross-party group of MPs called on the government to establish a legally-binding net zero emissions target in this Parliament, while the end of May saw think tank Bright Blue call for the UK to be the first G7 nation to adopt such a target.

Business leaders call on Brexit negotiators to secure close UK-EU climate cooperation

A coalition of 21 energy and business leaders has released a joint letter calling on the UK and EU to work together to ensure that the goals set under the Paris climate agreement are met following the Brexit process.
